MPR Shout-out & MCTC One Read

mpr news

An MPR News segment this morning discussed the ongoing issue of race and representation in children’s book publishing.

The fantastic Dr. Sarah Park Dahlen, one of the architects of recently released Lee and Low study of publishers, was one of the respondents, as was 2016 Newberry Award winner Matt de la Pena.

A listener called in at the end of the segment to recommend my book — whoever you are, I am blowing you kisses from the other side of this laptop screen.

MCTC

Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC), just announced that the 2016 Common Book will be See No Color. This means that faculty, staff, students, and leadership across the institution will be encouraged to read and discuss the book — particularly through the month of February.

Here is the press release that was just disseminated:

Common Book Reading

See No Color, Shannon Gibney, MCTC Instructor

This Common Book reading is designed to provide members of the campus community structured opportunities to engage in conversations informed by the work of Shannon Gibney, M.F.A., in her book, See No Color. This event is designed to provide opportunities for discussions of such concepts as racial identity, colorblindness, multiracial identity, racism, and various intersections such as race and gender. In addition to being the author of this very important book Ms. Gibney has served as a voice for matters of race, equity and privilege both locally and nationally. The book is available through http://www.lernerbooks.com and locally from Ancestry Books and other local independent booksellers. One may contact chaun.webster@gmail.com to order from Ancestry. A limited number of copies will be available for use by students in the Diversity Office, K 3000.
